The Age of Impressionism

COMING SOON!

Become an aficionado of

one of the most popular

styles in art!

Impressionism is one of the best known and loved movements in the history of art. Why? Perhaps it’s the warm, fuzzy feeling we get when we gaze upon an Impressionist painting that transports us to a sun-dappled landscape, a delightful seaside vista or the bustle of a modern city.  Or maybe it’s the bright colours, energetic brushwork and the sense that we are witnessing a fleeting moment captured in time.  Whatever the reason, we sometimes get lost in the beauty of these works and forget that Impressionism is about SO much more than the “prettiness” of it all.

In this course, which considers the subject within its French context, you will not only learn about the origins, characteristics and major players of this famous art movement, you will also gain valuable insights into two important topics that are sometimes overlooked: Impressionism in the Age of Industry and “Les Trois Grandes Dames”, or “The Three Great Ladies”.

So let’s grab our berets, fasten our neckerchiefs and travel back to 19th-century France!

Module 1:

THE WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE OF IMPRESSIONISM

Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Berthe Morisot…just a few of the household names associated with Impressionism, artists whose work we know and love.  But the story of how and why Impressionism came into being is just as intriguing as the artworks themselves.  Equally as fascinating is the evolution of the movement: the introduction of plein air painting; the shift from the timeless to the ephemeral; the increasing importance of colour and light.  In this module, we explore the emergence of this new style of painting, the artists who developed it and the dazzling works they produced.

Module 2:

"LES TROIS GRANDES DAMES": BERTHE MORISOT, MARY CASSATT AND MARIE BRAQUEMOND

In 1894, art critic and historian Gustave Geffroy named Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and Marie Braquemond “les trois grandes dames” – or “the three great ladies” – of Impressionism.  They exhibited with their male counterparts and Morisot was actually one of the founders and most dedicated members of the Impressionist group.  While they enjoyed varying degrees of success during their lifetimes, it's safe to say they are far less known today than the likes of Monet, Renoir and Degas.  Here, we examine the life and work of these three remarkable female artists in order to understand their role within, and contributions to, the Impressionist movement.

Module 3:

IMPRESSIONISM IN THE AGE OF INDUSTRY

The mid- to late 19th century was a period of tremendous change.  Technological innovations facilitated vast industrial growth in France, transforming both the rural and urban landscapes forever.  From an explosion of factories in the suburbs to the expansion of the railway network, no one was immune to the rapid pace of modernization, least of all artists.  By looking closely at paintings that reflect this very theme, we will not only learn how the Impressionists recorded the changing world around them, but also how they engaged and treated the topic of industry in their art.
